Emergency Prayers

You can see their dock to the right of the fire, in both photos.

Update: The fire responders were able to hold the fire 350 m away from them, and then the rains came. Father Nilos is very thankful for the help and prayers, Thanks be to God.

Our sister parish of St. John in the Wilderness is being threatened by a forest fire. Father Nilos has sent a request:

I am writing to ask for your prayers that God might provide rain for St John in the Wilderness Orthodox Sanctuary.  We are immediately threatened by a relentless forest fire. We have been working hard every day to prepare by laying out hoses and setting up a pump system from the lake. All valuable chapel items and icons have been evacuated across the lake. We are now wetting the structures and surrounding forest. The fire is slowly relentlessly coming and is being fought by ground and air. They are camped nearby and the helicopters pick up buckets of water constantly right beside our dock. The sound is deafening at times.

Despite our deep fatigue we have served Vespers and Liturgy in Kaslo and feel blessed by what we are living through. I have four parishioners helping and staying with me at all times. Our funds in our account have been depleted. It would be a blessing if some donations could arrive. The next few days will be critical but we feel safe in the midst of it all as the boat is always ready.

In Humble Gratitude in the love of our Lord,

Fr Nilos

Please remember them regularly, invoking the prayers of our dear patron St Aidan and St. Herman of Alaska – both of whom successfully petitioned God to stop fires in their own times and are known to be of great help in fire situations.

Also please give generously today as the need is immediate to help Fr. Nil and our dear sister parish of St John in the Wilderness.

You may e-transfer directly to St. Aidan with a memo “for St John fire fund” to [email protected]

Or use your credit card through the Canada Help app on our website at:

May God have mercy upon Fr. Nil and Matushka Sheila and the parish of St John in the Wilderness.
